So you have bought that horse you have always dreamed of! Now it is time to start enjoying your ‘best friend’. Horses are a delight for an owner – young, old, inexperienced and experienced. I don’t know about you, but I would prefer my children and family to be outdoor and enjoying the fresh air and each other rather than sitting in front of a television or Xbox. It is a wonderful experience for young children to learn the responsibility of looking and caring for an animal and realising the rewards that our equine friends give back to us. I must say that I have always enjoyed coming home to my horses as they are always pleased to see me (yah) and help me release any stresses of the day.

NZ Working Equitation Championships

On Sunday 24th May, the first New Zealand Working Equitation Championship was held in Christchurch, New Zealand. The event was organised by Sarah Blackburn and was sponsored by Blackburn Equitation. Leading New Zealand Grand Prix Dressage rider and Lusitano breeder, Jody Hartstone, traveled from the North Island to judge at the event. Entries were received from throughout the country, however local riders triumphed in both classes. The Introductory Championship was won by Alison Sutton and the Preliminary Championship went to Mimi Atkinson.

After a brilliant start in the current performance season, the Spanish Riding School is already preparing intensively for the anniversary performances, which will take place in June of the current year. Apart from the classic performances where the riders together with their Lipizzaner stallions present the High School of Classical Horsemanship and the programme of the Morning Exercise, which serves as daily exercise for the horses, our riders have yet started to train diligently for the gala performance at the Heldenplatz Square, taking place from June 25 to June 27.
